This pic was sent in by a relative. He needs to clean his grill more often. These Honey bees must have swarmed and landed here this spring. It was a shame he had to kill the colony, because we have so few healthy colonies. Bee keepers love to get these swarms because they are the strongest colonies.

Each year at this time I have lots of calls to eradicate Yellow Jackets. Not this year. An entomologist at Oregon State has said that the very cold and rainey spring has killed off most of the over wintering queens. I believe that this kill off has applied to several other species as well. Even the carpenter ant numbers are down significantly.

Good news for homeowners and not so good for me.

UPDATE:  They are back. as of this writing, Spring 2010, the yellow jacket and ant numbers are back to normal. The weather is usually the biggest controlling  factor on insect populations.
