At Nature Fitst Pest Control we are well aware of a new highly resistant strain of Staphylococcus. It is nicknamed MRSA, short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is most prevalent in nursing homes and health care surroundings. It is also common in gyms, locker rooms, military barracks, day care centers and other places where groups of people hang out.
MRSA can be carried to surfaces by insects and rodents. This is an opportunistic infection that you can get through any scratch or small wound.
These infections are often misdiagnosed as spider or insect bites. The ONLY way to know for sure is for a doctor to take a culture from the wound. It takes several days after the exposure to develope a sore that is very slow to heal.
Be advised that pets can get these sores and transfer this resistant staph infection to their owners. This happens often with therapy pets visiting nursing homes.

I just came back from a seminar today. The theme was Green treatments and marketing. Dr Frishman was one of the speakers and showed us some new products that really work. One of them was an ant proof tray to put pet food dishes and even plants on. The tray utilizes a recessed pad of a repellent around the short ‘legs’.
They also have ant guards for humming bird feeders. Check them out at www.AntGuard.com

Japanese beetles or Lady bugs were all the rage a few years ago. Folks bought them by the thousands and released them into their gardens to control aphids. Now we seem to have more than we need and they are a real nusance in some areas.
Garden releases were good in theory, but failed to take into account the real world. First, if there were not a Lot of aphids in your garden, the lady bugs would fly off in search of same. You had to time their release just right to get any benefit at all. And there were non native sub species introduced that may eventually prove to be of more harm than good. I suppose the lesson here is that even with the best ideas, there can be unintended consequences. And don’t buy any more lady bugs.

The Hanta Virus is present in the Pacific NorthWets. Variations of this virus are present in almost all rodent populations. Deer mouse droppings have been connected with deaths in the Arid South West and about four in our area. It is believed by most Medical professionals that this virus can only infect humans by inhaling the dried, pulverized droppings from these infected mice.
The implications are that you should contact someone who can give you some sound information about remediation strategies. Beware, some companies specialize in ‘overkill’ when dealing with these mice.

This swarm of termites is even rarer this year. Reports from around the country say that swarming is way down from years past. The experts conjecture that atmospheric conditions have not been just right and the workers in the colony are cannibalizing the flights.
This swarm was photographed by me at the base of my driveway here in Tigard. The first thing I did after taking some pictures was to make sure that there were no swarms close to my house. A swarm next to the house would have indicated that there was a good chance that a colony had started to munch on the house.
These are reproductive termites, called aletes. They are easy to identify by their long double set of wings. Both sets of wings being of equal length. Ants and termites reproduce this way. Once a year the colony produces the new males and queens and nurtures them until one magic moment in a neighborhood when all of the aletes from all of the colonies spring into the air and ride thermal currents up hundreds of feet. There mating takes place and the males fall to the ground. The new queens extend their wings and using infrared sensors, glide to a likely place to start a new colony
